Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation (IASTM)

IASTM is a soft tissue treatment technique. The doctor or therapist uses either a plastic, metal, or composite tool to treat soft tissue fibrosis, scar tissue, and restrictions.

The treatment may be uncomfortable, but it should not be painful. The technique is designed to improve blood flow to tissues that are hypoxic, meaning they have decreased oxygen delivery. IASTM also causes a small inflammatory reaction in the area treated, which helps bring cells to the area that can clean up debris and facilitate the healing process.

When scar tissue is laid down after either an acute or chronic injury, it lays down haphazardly, instead of in the direction that motion usually occurs in that tissue. This causes stiffness, hypoxia, and limited range of motion. IASTM is a very effective tool to correct these issues.
